Here's Rocco

Here's my little Rankin's dragon Rocco. I got him in February at a pet shop in Vegas. I have enjoyed him sooo much. He ate lettuce from my hands the first day we got home and he drinks water from a dropper. He's about 10 inches now and was 8 1/2" when I bought him. He loves to eat crickets, mealworms, earthworms grasshoppers, and pillbugs. He's not crazy about veggies, but likes peas, strawberries, and sometimes dark green lettuce. I made him a little scarf to wear when I take him
to school to show my students. I've always wanted a Rankins and I haven't been disappointed. Thanks for reading!

Truly I must have the sleepiest Rankins in the world. This summer he never even bothered to get active as he was too busy shedding and therefore hiding!!!! He's 84g now, hopefully nearly full grown(?) so I might get a bit more time with him next summer boo hiss grizz......
(for those who don't know my Rankins sleeps for 8/9 months of the year and has done since the age of three months. Thank goodness for the snakes who keep me entertained!

Posted by: SamandBeth
Replies: 2

hi everyone, im new to this site, and to keeping rankins, ive just got 3 today that are about 8 weeks old, breeder tried to sex them for me, so i think ive got 1 male and 2 females, ive put them all in a 4ft viv that had been set up ready, they have been in viv about 10 hrs now and they have just started to move, ive tried feeding them baby crickets and they are not interested, ive provided water and dried food, meal worms and some cuecumber so hopefully they wil feed on that untill they get settled. A problem that i have got at the moment is that i set the thermosat to 95 as advised by website, ive got a digital thermo in hot end and another in the cool end, the light is constantley going on and off which i understand is regulating the heat in the viv, however it doesnt go on when temp drops to 87-88, is this normal and advise please on any aspect on care for my dragons.Donna

Posted by: donnakelly
Replies: 7

2010 Pre-Brumation check-in

Hi everyone,

Well, it's getting to be that time of year again. Brumation is just around the corner and we have quite a few new members who are likely going to have some questions or concerns around this topic, so I thought I'd start a topic that addresses concerns ahead of time. The best way to avoid unnecessary panic is to understand a little bit about brumation and what to look for.

Put simply, brumation is a form of hibernation. Not a deep sleep, more like a good nap. Depending on conditions in the enclosure, in the room the enclosure is situated in and the weather outside you Dragon may decide that he/she wants to brumate.

Brumation usually starts in Autumn and runs through Spring, so around September/October to February/March. It is followed in April by the start of breeding season.

Prior to brumation, you will notice a gradual decrease in bot activity and appetite. The animal may start to dig a lot in various places around the enclosure.

[b:1md8bfxw]It is extremely important that sick or underweight animals not be allowed to brumate wherever possible. During their sleep they will not consume any food. Instead, they will use fat cells stored in their tails to provide sustenance. Underweight animals simply don't have enough fat cells stored away and as a consequence will often emerge from brumation with complications.[/b:1md8bfxw]

In an average home environment it's probably fair to say: Not every Dragon will brumate. Not every Dragon that does brumate will brumate regularly from year to year. Breeders, and keepers who intend to breed their animals, will prepare the animal for brumation by gradually reducing the number of hours of light in the enclosure (known as the photoperiod). Typically, the light is reduced at the rate of about 1.5 hr per month starting mid to late August, to mimic light patterns outdoors. The goal is to get down to about 8 hours or less by December/January and to start increasing again mid February to get back up to about 14 hours by June. This process can be difficult to get right, especially with younger animals and should not really be attempted by inexperienced keepers. Changing the photoperiod is NOT a necessity. If you want to do something to help your Dragon the best approach might be to reduce their photoperiod down to 10 hours of light per day and keep it that way from September to the end of February, then put it back up to 14 hours a day.

It's always a good thing to have you Dragon checked over by your reptile vet before they brumate. If you can, take a fecal sample to the vet for parasite testing, as some of the biggest problems I have seen from brumation come from lizards that had parasites before they went to sleep.

If you have any questions or concerns about brumation, this thread is a good place to post them. That way we have one place we can all come to.

Hope this helps,

Nigerian Uromastyx or ornate uromastyx?

[b:35l8tpxz]I walked into my favorite local pet shop yesterday, and a few days ago they had gotten in 2 adorable, 5" baby ornate uros. They were eating, and active when I held them. They had nice pretty patterns but were not showing any color. ( Do the colorful ornates show color when they are this young or does it begin to develope with each shed?) I have heard that as adults, Ornates tend to be couch potatoes. I not sure if that is a bad thing or not.

I've read alot of nice reports about the Nigerian Uromastyx which I think is smaller than the ornate. People say they have great personalities, even as adults. I hope some of you have had experience with both of these and can share the pros and cons of each. Also, because these are small uros I'd think they wouldn't need as large an enclosure as the bigger uros would need. What is the minimum size tank you'd recommend for a single, Nigerian or ornate uromastyx?

Thanks again for reading my post and hopefully replying to it. [/b:35l8tpxz]

Posted by: pet lover
Replies: 1

Hi Folks. I've had my first Rankins for a couple of days now. Maiden, as I call her (although the eggs were incubated for male) is 12 weeks. I've been hand feeding her just now. She's not that keen on veg and has eaten her bugs. I've not caught her drink any water or bathe herself yet though. Her water is in a transparent container. I wonder if she will recognise it? Hopefully a matter of time.

[b:2vc88scd]I am interested in getting an Ornate Uromastyx. They aren't big, they are colorful and are known to be calmer than some of the others. I came acrossed a breeder who has Philbyi uromastyx which I'm not familiar with. Here is a quote from his website: " One advantage the Philbyi seem to have is that they are so calm. They eat edible flowers right out of my hand and bask right in front of me and do not run and hide when I enter the room. I feel that they are much less nervous than say a Sudanese, Saharan, Benti therefore they should make a great pet or addition to your collection." Has anyone had experience with the Philbyi and can validate what this breeder has to say about them? Do uromastyx, in general, have personality or are they couch potatoes? How would you compare them to bearded dragons as pets? Thanks for reading my post and I'll be looking forward to your replies.[/b:2vc88scd]

Posted by: pet lover
Replies: 1

Behaviour interpretations

I showed my new Uro to Rex today, at a fair distance and through the glass (Uro in the tank looking the other way, Rex in my hand) ... He seemed REALLY desperate to get to it. Now Rex has been extremely active the past few months constantly clawing away at the glass trying to get out - we and the vet have come to the conclusion he is trying to find a mate, but he's calmed in recent weeks. When he saw the Uro he took on that manic feel again, really wriggling and clawing away at my hands trying to get free.

I have no intention of letting the two get near each other just incase anything does happen, but I am rather intrigued if this is aggressive behaviour (Rex has lived alone with me since he was 6weeks old), just curiosity or somehow thinking this could be a mate. I can't really see him clawing away like this only to get to the other lizard and suddenly calm down and just sit with it. His beard isnt changing color at all which I thought was a sign of aggression, he isn't puffing up or anything else I've ever seen him do when angry.

Does anyone have any Idea? I'm rather curious.

It would be nice if I could have the two out together but unless I had had the two since they were both very young together I don't think this would ever be possible so don't intend to try. Rex has never seemed aggressive to me - although not as playful as he was when he was little, but being alone for so long I could understand him being territorial.

Posted by: Crimson
Replies: 3

Hi everyone!!

Haven't been on here for a long time... Merlin is still going strong, he must be about 8 or 9 years old now...

I bought him a new deeper water bowl today as his other one was too shallow, I was using a feeding dish... He got in it from the moment I put it in there and hasn't got out and has now fallen asleep in it with his head propped up on the side of the bowl... I'm slightly concerned about the idea of him sleeping in water?? He is shedding at the moment so I think thats the reason he has stayed in the water...

Posted by: mandiwoodley
Replies: 2

Hi
Just wanted to let you all know how my baby beardies are getting on.

Lunar is putting on weight nicely, about 1/2 a gram a day.
Solar had some feeding problems initially and wouldn't eat anything for 2 days.
I suspected Lunar was intimidating her because she wouldn't eat when he was around but would eat when I fed her seperately in a plastic tub. She lost about 2 grams but has now put back on 3 1/2 grams.

I have bathed them both and they loved it. They have both shed some skin, Solar on his tail and Lunar on her head.

They have showed no signs of stress at being in a new place or being together (except Solars feeding problem which seems to be resolved).

They love to be handled and seem to know my voice. I talk to them a lot and if they see me walk in the room their little heads pop up to greet me.

Lunar loves to sleep vertically hanging from the spikes of a plastic cactus and will hang there for hours, Solar likes to slob out on a tree branch to sleep.

I will post some pics when I get some.

Hi all,

It saddens me to say I have to re-home my 3 Rankin dragons due to extended travel.
I have 1 male in a 3ft viv and a male and female in a 4ft viv they are brothers and sisters.
They are about 2 years old and all are well and healthy and have been taken regularly to the vets for check ups.
I am not looking for any money for my precious ones or their vivs and equipment; I just want to be assured that they will be looked after regardless of cost.
Ideally I would like them to go an experienced keeper who is looking to expand their collection.
If anyone can help or point me in the right direction it would be greatly appreciated

I have just brought home 2 new baby bearded dragons today. I could no longer walk past the tank and see it empty.I sterilised everything and threw away the log and replaced it with a new one. I also set the tank up a couple of days ago to get it up to temperature.

I've got a Blood Red Rainbow cross called Solar and a normal coloured dragon called Lunar. They are both from different parents so if they are male and female and get along ok I will hopefully be able to let them breed.

They are about 7 weeks old and seem to be quite happy in their new tank.
They went mad when I put a few crickets in and caught them all in less than a minute. They have also both been in the veg dish eating that too.

I know they will never replace Button but I do know they will have as happy a life as he did.

Button my little guy became ill on monday. He'd been a bit off for a few days so I took him to the vets.
We thought it could be Metabolic bone disease as he had no strength in his legs so he was started on calcium and vitamin injections.
3 days later he started passing blood stained poo so I rushed him back to the vets and we started him on antibiotics. He had an x ray which showed his bones were ok. It did however show a tumour in his tummy.
The vet took some blood and did a scan of his tummy which showed he had some fluid in his abdomen and she tried to drain some of it to send it to be tested.
I was to take him back on monday for the results of the tests to find out what it was.
I took him home and put him back in his tank.
About half an hour later I went to check him and he was gasping.
I wrapped him in a little blanket I had for him and he died in my arms about 10 minutes later.

Sweet dreams little Button I will miss you so much. x x x

Posted by: Terri
Replies: 5

I'm going to be a newbie! I'm in the process of getting every thing set up so planing to be ready at the end of August after my Hols. I live in Camberley, Surrey 30 miles south of London. Do any of you know of any Rankin Breeders near me? I hate the thought of using couriers under any condition, but I am limited on how far I can travel.
Many Thanks

FEMALE RANKIN LOOKS SO PALE - HELPPPP!!!!

Hiya,

I have a male and a female rankins, have had them both from about 8 weeks old, they are approximately 2 years now and have always lived together in the same viv.

The female has laid a few clutches of eggs, and laid again about a month ago. Since then however she appears to be extremely pale in colour in comparison to the male. She is really well in herself, is eating really well and none of her behaviour has changed, she looks really well too - It's just her colour I am a little concerned about. The male is still the same colour as he has always been, but she is almost white!!

I'm getting a little worried that it may be a problem with her liver or something like that?? Or is this quite normal when they are in the breeding season??

Any help would be great, hope to hear from you soon. I'll try and get a photo uploaded so you can see the difference in colour between them!

Thanks,
Debbie.

Posted by: beckyjosh
Replies: 2

Rogue is looking quite fat today.

I don't think she is being over fed and she has about 8 or 9 crickets in the morning and another 8 or 9 in the afternoon. I make sure I feed them, so that they have plenty of time to bask after before the night temp kicks in. I dust her crickets 3 times a week with calcium and dust their veg with calcium and vitimins.

I have however fed them wax worms yesterday and today...first time I have fed her wax worms. But looking at her from the side when she is in stand up stance, her stomache is almost touching the floor.

What do you think it could be? or is it normal?
Or does she simply just need to bask?

Basking Temperature

Hi Folks

My previous posts stated that I am Rankins less. I still am. I have ordered one from down south and if it goes smoothly should receive one in the next few weeks. In the meantime I'm trying to sort out the viv, in particular the basking temperature. My viv is all glass by the way, 3ft in length with a mesh top. Similar to the 3ft Exo Terra.

I've been trying out various normal household bulbs before splashing out on a proper basking bulb and experimenting with the variety of temperatures/heat the bulbs can give out. Started with a 60W, going up in the wattages and today tried a 150W. I presume a normal 150W household bulb will give out the same heat as a 150W proper basking bulb? Proper basking bulb meaning one I can purchase from an online reptile suppliers, eg. livefood website.

The top temperature I am getting from the normal household 150W bulb is only 84F. I need around 100F. I guess I will have to use a much higher wattage of bulb, yes??

Another thing. When you first switch on the basking lamp in the mornings, how long should it take before the temperature should reach the desired basking temperature of 100F ish?

I welcome your replies.

Hiya

Is it normal for my sons rankins to be skittish.

We have had them for neary 2 weeks and one day they are ok and another, they run away from our hand when it enters their tank. I don't like to make them feel pressured. But my son would like to be able to hold them. We do hold them sometimes, then other times they don't want to go near us.

Also, I am finding it hard to keep up with their intake of crickets. The store I brought them from said around 4 to 5 crickets each twice daily is fine. But they seem to easily go through 40 a day, and it is costing a fortune to keep up with buying them at the moment. They don't seem to eat much veg atall, if not any.

Regards.

Thinking of getting a/some Rankin's

Hello, I looked up this forum and joined it because I am interested in Rankin's dragons. I am thinking of getting one (not until Christmas), and I was wondering: Can two or more Rankins be housed together? I have read this on a number of sites and I wasn't sure if it was true. It seems odd because they are so closely related to Bearded Dragons, who should not be housed with other Beardies. I have also read that two adult Rankins can be kept in a 36 inchx18 inchx18 inch (91cmx45cmx45cm)enclosure. Is this true? I currently have a Bearded Dragon and have heard that their care is very similar, so I believe that I would be a capable owner. Thanks in advance.

i'm a little worried..

i have had my rankins Mojo for about 3 weeks now, he is roughly 9-10 weeks old and s/he is lovely little thing (i'll say he for now!)
when i first got Mojo i tried him on all different insects and he would either freeze and shut his eyes or run when i put anything in his tank that wasnt a slow moving mealworm. he gobbled mealworms up for the first week and a half and now he has slowly stopped eating them..i have had to really sit with him and wiggle them about for ages to get a few down him. i tried him again with crickets and he totally ignored them and this morning for the first time he licked some veg (thats the most he has done with that since i have had him! had to work at that though!) i know rankins can be picky eaters but i am worried it could be something else

nothing has changed his his viv, all the temps are the same and i havent moved anything. his poop looks normal, just not as much because of the lack of interest in food.

when I hold him he is alert and likes to explore and run about. I did however give him his first bath last week...could this have effected him? its been baking hot here in london so i thought a warm bath would make sure he was hydrated seeing as hes not touching his veg etc

I am such a newbie at this that I am worried that i am doing something wrong!

Posted by: animalmagic
Replies: 29
