Hi, bit worried about our lizard , think she may be be brumating but seems too young at 6 months. I have read some of the other comments and wonder whether we need to see a vet. She has def. slowed down on pooing and is only eating a few wax worms and maybe a chunk of veg in a whole day. Thermostat is set at 31 c and we have not changed anything else. She has fresh water and a cuddle or two a day and is lively when out, during the rest of the time she hides away under a rock and is cool to the touch when we pick her up. Not sure if this is parasites, this is our first lizard. Hope someone can suggest something!! thanks.

Posted by: lmulshaw
Replies: 1

Hi, New forum member here. I've been a Rankins owner for 7 years now with my pair. I guess they are getting on a bit now for Rankins, but are a pleasure to own and have never been much trouble. We have a male and female called Lara and Groucho. Lara is named after lara Croft the computer game heroine, du to the fact that she also makes huge jumps at tiny ledges and can escape from just about any enclosure! Groucho is just that... A right misery guts. I picked him as he was the runt of the clutch and was being picked on and bitten by his siblings. He's never gotten very big, but has a brilliant little character. He will sit with me at night snuggling into my neck, but will attack the remote control if left alone with it!

Also have a clutch of eggs in the Incubator at the mo. Due to hatch in a few weeks!

hi,

I have now got 2 new rankins after buddy died peacefully. They are now a year and a few months they are called sunny and sandy.

recently I have noticed that sunnys nails have grown long and she is getting caught in materials like my T-shirt.

What I would like to know is if you can cut dragons nails and is there a safe way to do it, I don't want to hurt her.

any help would be appreciated

thanks, Buddy

Posted by: buddy
Replies: 5

hi
i'm new to this forum and also new to rankins. me and my boyfriend are wanting one/two of these reptiles and have already begun buying the equipment etc but are finding it really difficult to find the reptile. preferably we would like babies however we have also considered young adults.

we live in wakefield but are willing to travel up to distances 2 hours away providing this will be okay for the reptiles to travel

Also what wattage spot light would be preferable in a viv 36"

After a good amount of research and creeping the forums a new rankin (unsure if possibly a tad vittikin - hope not but with anything finding a true true pure anything in this world is harder and harder) has entered our home. They are nearly impossible to find here in Canada so finding one in general was a battle. Unsure of age although he is a juvenile - however if anyone would like to give their two cents that would be greatly appreciated. Sex signs are there and we are confident in the fact of him being a him. His colours are lighter (just the photo filters playing with colour as its low light) and is just finishing a shed as his legs are still of colour.Currently have him housed in a 36x18x18 exo terra terrarium, full UVB canopy, reptile carpet, yada yada...

Photos will be posted as time goes on so keep posted and comments are always appreciated.

--------

For now here are the latest photos a few days after he's had time to settle in. He prefers basking on the rocks then the wood itself, basking spots range from 90-105F in heat depending on where and what hes on. Still little finicky eating his crickets but does eat and I'm sure as he gets settled more appetite will grow with it vs being cautious. I'm trying to get him to feed in a smaller feeder tank to avoid having crickets getting lost in the decor and such.

vomiting

Hi this is my first post after recently joining this site. I have read a lot of info on here which has been really useful.
I brought 2 rankins and a complete viv setup on Saturday from a local shop who were really helpful and seemed to know what they were talking about. The problem tonight is one of the dragons has vomited twice which must have been food from yesterday as I haven't fed them today. He also doesn't seem very active and not fully opening his eyes. The other dragon seems fine and full of energy.

The basking spot is between 100 and 105 degrees and night temp is around 71

Thanks in advance for any advice

Few questions 6yr old Rankins

I have a 6yr old Rankins called Dexter

He actually belongs to my sister but I took him on last year, she relocated to Africa with her work and couldnt bear to let him go to anyone she didnt know.

I did a fair bit of research with her initially when she got him, and refreshed my knowledge before I took him on.

Just before christmas, he became quite sleepy constantly tucked away in the cold end and wasnt eating as much as he normally did. He wont eat anything unless it is alive so we gutload hoppers, he has meal worms, crickets and morio worms. I also dust the hoppers etc in calcium powder once to twice a week. He would eat 4-5 hoppers or crickets etc every few days and inbetween cant be coaxed to eat anything.
Between then and now I have been bringing him out to put under his basking lamp and the bathe him in tepid water, as recommended by the place my sister got him from. During this time he has barely eaten anything and hasnt passed a poo either.

I was told by the lady in the shop that he is reaching the top end of his life expectancy? is this correct??

In the last couple of days he has been really active, running about his viv, eating loads, has pooed, he happily climbs up on his log under the uv strip lamp and basking. He has also shed too.

The temperatures in his viv are 90-110 in the hot end 110 when basking lamp is on, and cold end 75 at night going up to 85 during the day.

Does this sound like normal behaviour for a Rankins of this age?

Posted by: Micholliday
Replies: 5

A few questions

Replies: 1

Hi everyone !

Myself and my fiancée have just brought home our new Rankins Dragon 'Hector'
After a year or more of looking into which reptile to keep, a Rankin was our choice

First things first, we all like photos so here he is ....

Also a video....

[url:7xl8amk0]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=acXD_j-Gc4A[/url:7xl8amk0]

He is loving his live food but still a little slow to tuck into his fruit and veg so trying a good mix at the moment.
I will share more as the days / weeks progress.

Hi, I'm getting 2 female Rankins in approx 4-5 weeks time and would just like confirmation that the following set up would be ok please. Don't know what age they will be. I live in Northern Ireland and the local reptile shop will probably bring them in from England.

Viv is Vivexotic 4ft x (D) 19" x (H) 21" I already have this for 2 female leopard geckos but its too big for them so going to put them into a 3 ft Viv & use the 4ft for the rankins.

Arcadia D3 Reptile Lamp 38w, 6% UVB 42"
Arcadia Halogen Basking Spot 75W
For Nightitme - Komodo Nightglow Spot Lamp 50w
plus all the appropriate temperature controls etc.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Posted by: purdo
Replies: 3

I'm potentially buying a rep off my friend who swears it's a bearded dragon however i feel the size of it as it is 1 year old points towards it being a Rankins.

If anyone could potentially help with this i'd be so grateful, it won't alter my choice but it would be brilliant to know!

Is my Rankins dragon gravid?

I have 2 2 year old Rankins dragons, 1 male & 1 female. They both seemed to brumate early winter but now they seem to be doing it again.
I've just got them out one at a time to give them a bath to prevent them dehydrating and my girl seems puffier than usual. When she spreads her back she seems to be more round where she usually goes flat. I can't feel any unusual lumps or bumps though. She also got tetchy when I picked her up and seems more aware of me than normal. She's never even threatened to bite before but today she went toward me as if she might.
I wondered if any of you with experience might be able to tell me if this points toward her being gravid or just grumpy.

Hi, new Rankin in the family, we are on a steep learning curve! Day 4 now and we love our lizard but the crickets are doing my head in! can anyone tell me why they are so noisy when they are supposed to be silent?! I have put them in a tank of their own with cucumber/ apple and water and they seem happy! The rankin loves them and is hunting them when she's hungry, we put 5-6 in at a timeso I'm guessing it's better for her to have live ones. They also do seem to have grown quite quickly! Any help or suggestions would be great. Lou M.

Posted by: lmulshaw
Replies: 8

Hi, My sister took me to petsmart to get mealworms. When I got back I put them in my rankins salad bowl and he ran over and ate them, he missed a couple of times and chopped down some greens(yes). My dad says that I wasted my money because mealworms are not good for my dragon. My dad ordered phoenix worms off the internet. He says that these are better and that I dont have to put calcium on them(is he, right). I did not say a word but wanted to say if they not good for reptiles petsmart would not be selling them. MY dad told me to feed Stitch about 15 phoenix worms one day and next 7 crickets and everyday greens veggies.
the question is, should I feed phoenix worms or mealworms? Thanks Amaru ( age 12)

Posted by: bk27
Replies: 1

I've recently introduced a new young female to my year-old (extremely lazy) male. They share the viv entirely happily and if she's frightened, she runs over to him and stands on top of him and he ignores her, so I assume they are content together.
Recently started letting her out for runs round the room when he's also out for a saunter. She will suddenly spot him, rush over to him and appear to peck him on the neck quite hard. He turns sideways to her and just stares, sometimes with his beard slightly puffed out. She then bobs her head a few times and moves away. Any ideas what this behaviour means? Do they not recognise each other outside the viv? It's been happening for about a week now and always the same.

Hi all.
Just thought I would let you all know about a new gadget I have found.
It's called an Arboreal food clip.
Its a pack of 2 plastic clips made by Zoo Med which have a suction cup on the back to stick it to the glass of the tank.
You clip it to sprigs of leaves and it prevents them from being dragged across the floor.
My Beardies have a habit of dragging their leaves out of their dishes and sitting on them, or even worse pooping on them so it's more hygienic and can be washed between uses.
It costs about £1.80 for 2 clips.

I wonder if someone can help me ..... i have two Rankins, one male and one female housed together in a 15inch wide - 56inch long tank with a 60W ceramic bulb and repti-glo 10.0 UVB, (both brand new bulbs) its heat reg with a habistat:

................ hot ...............cold
Day...... 33.5c - 37.7c ..... 26c - 28c (cant get the temp down)

night....... 29c - 31c .......... 21c

i have two therm sensors one in cool end and one directly on the basking spot, the habitstat sensor is next to the therma sensor on the basking spot.

i bath them twice a week -- Tues/Fri, they have lots of fresh veg and mealworms on offer, they wont eat crickets etc (trust me iv tried!) they have a good sized water bowl. they are on Calcisand which neither have been eating plus a small bowl of calcidust on offer too.

I have had them about 2 weeks, i bought them from a lady who said they are about 6 months old although i think they maybe a month or so older as the male has suddenly over the past few weeks grown and now has a very wide head and his beard is darkening! my boy is growing up lol the male is very lively and very healthy eating plenty of mealworms even from hand but the female is starting to concern me the last few days she has not seemed very happy ... she will spend most of the day in her water bowl !! i take her out and place her in the warm and she perks up but then returns back to the water 10 mins later, she will go a day where she is fine and perky then a day when she is quiet and hides! i have noticed during her hiding times her beard get darker so obviously not very happy although her beard settles down and lightens up when i take her out and sit her on my chest. i have not seen her eat but i have been out most days and a lot of the veg has been eatten but not sure by who!!

At the moment she is asleep in her water bowl again!! im not sure if its stress as their viv was changed etc but the male is VERY happy and very cheeky!! on her good days she will tap at the glass to get your attention and to make it known she wants to come out so not quite sure what to make of it!

Any advise would be welcome she is well hydrated as is bathed twice a week and sits in it all day!!

I have just weighed them Male - 97g and Female - 75g they are both the same age

UPDATE - i have now moved my Female Rankin in to a Viv of her own ... i dont know how to post photos!! ..... she still insists on staying in the water bowl !! i have been feeding her small amounts of veg baby food to encurrage her to eat, she hasnt lost weight but is very latharic! i am a little confused as to what temps i should have in the tank ... do mine seem ok? they both prefer the cooler end but i am having problems keepng the heat down ...

Posted by: msanders35
Replies: 2

Im building a large custom background for my rankins - Poly foam/grout etc.
I plan on incorporating a large pool area/stream into the floor of the viv, roughly 10cm deep and approx 1.5ft square + river section (12cm wide/8cm deep)

My question is - could i put some tropical fish in it without the rankins taking a nibble?
I was thinking a few corys/livebearers.

Obviously i will need to install a filter but what about a heater if the viv is at 75f all day?

Posted by: leehanson89
Replies: 1

Hello, My son and I became a member of this site, so that he could be able to take care of his Rankins Dragon. The Problem is that his best friend and cousin have Bearded Dragons. I guess he kept it a secret from them until recently. They told him it was not a Rankins Dragon. We would like for someone to tell us what Stitch is. He named him after leo and Stitch.
Hi all, Ive had them a month now. I first brought 2 sister rankin dragons both 5-6 months old and they settled in really quick and have shed once already. I was looking in to getting a male and mating them but ended up getting a male that was apparently the runt of its clutch as even the egg was smaller then the others! Hes grown in the last month ive had him but when I got him he was half the size of my females yet was 9 months old! Ive seperated them now as the bigger of the two females would head bob and run over and sit on him like she does to her sister and he would just constantly wave in submission, so im trying to get him bigger. I really struggle to get any of them to eat anything other than live food but there just not interested, so any help on that would be appreciated.

Posted by: karlos72
Replies: 5

Sorry for disappearing, but I've been really busy with moving to our new house and then I've made my 26th years old madness.. I've decided to begin university for a degree in "Animals' breeding and healthness" at the vets university here in Milan.. so I'm starting to build my future with animals

More to this, I've finally found a nice male to complete my pair of rankins dragon and everything's going on fine.

I've got only one question for you: I know that for vitticeps, the minimum weight to try for a mating is 250 gr. What about rankins? My female is about 50 gr but I'd like to bulk her up to 75 gr..

Thanks to everyone,

Hi,

Some of you may have noticed that I haven't been posting to the Board much recently.

I was made redundant from my job at the beginning of January, so most of my attention has been focused on looking for a job.

On a brighter note, I accepted an offer this morning, so I hope to be back in the workplace again soon

Hi
I'm after another Rankin Dragon to replace the one we had that died a few weeks ago, I believe he was too young, so unfortunately he only lived about three weeks, & this has greatly upset my young son.
I have a 2 foot Viv, so if somebody could help me out with one local to me in the wolverhampton area, I'd be very much apprecaitive.

Posted by: Mark65
Replies: 2

Finding them hard to find

Hi there

I'm totally new to this forum so I should introduce myself

My name is heather, I'm 40 years old, devoted to my many animals, I breed guinea pigs (& show them), have 2 parrots & a cockatiel, 2 Horsefields tortoises and 1 crested gecko, Ollie. I'm also soon getting a leopard gecko, she's called Magic

Anyway I've been searching and searching for Rankins within the Manchester area and they seem impossible to find. It's taken a while for me to persuade my elderly dad (who I live with) how cool lizards are and he is also keen on getting a rankins, I've got the shopping list, I've read all the info, but can't find my dragon

The problem is I have back problems and am disabled and although I do drive I can't drive too far, an hour each way max, I'd rather go to a breeder but a NICE pet shop would be ok, if anyone could recommend one

Advice needed re night time temperature

I need some advice about night time temperature for my Rankins Dragon.

Before I purchased it, I tested the vivarium and noticed that, with everything turned off at night, the temperature dropped to about 58F. So I purchased a day and night thermostat. Using this raised my night time temperature to 68F.

Now I've got my dragon, we noticed one night that he was trying to bask under the spot lamp at 4:00am. This worried me because it meant that he wouldn't be getting a full night's rest and also, I'm sure that being up and awake when the temperature is low can't be any good for him.

Last night I turned off the night time part of the thermostat and instead covered the vivarium in a blanket. The temperature only fell to 62F, and, my dragon was still asleep when the spot lamp came on this morning. by the time we came to feed him, he was alert and ate well.

So my question is this. Even though it's below the recommended 65F, is 62F still an acceptable night time temperature? It was quite a cold night last night and I'm guessing that in the Summer I won't have any issues with it getting too low.

Or should I look at buying a low powered ceramic heater (say 40W or even 25W) just to prevent the temperature from dropping too low?

Thanks.

Posted by: melliott1963
Replies: 4

Lunar.

I took Solar and Lunar my beardies to the vets for a check up in December. They were in perfect health though we were worried about 2 small growths on Lunars back and tail (just where it joins her body). The vet had a look and took some photos of them and told me to keep an eye on them, any changes to take her back.
The one on her back was probably a damaged scale as it disappeared when she shed.

Yesterday I bathed Lunar and the skin on her tail shed shortly after but the growth was still there and looked a funny colour.
I kept an eye on it today and noticed after she'd been running around her tank it was bleeding quite a bit. It seemed to take ages to stop but when it did I covered it in Germolene.
I rang the vets and they could fit me in this evening.
The vet had a look at it and we decided between us that she should remove it tomorrow morning under anaesthetic.
Poor little Lunar has to stay at the vets tonight.
She is going to send the growth to be analysed to see what it is.
Before I left her I opened the pet carrier and Lunar jumped out onto my shoulder for a cuddle. It was as if she knew I was leaving her.
I just hope she will be alright.

Hello, i collected my 12 week old rankins dragon (Elvis) on sunday he was in a 18" enclosure with 2 others of the same age, the shop assistant said they were shedding and eating really well, when i got home i put him in his new viv 36/18/18 with 10% uv light, a 50w basking lamp and a ceramic lamp controlled by a habistat pulse thermostat.
my temperatures are
Basking spot 100 - 105
middle 85 - 90
cool end 80 - 85
at night 75
im concerned now because since sunday he hasnt eaten a thing and just seems to stay in his little cave in the cool end, i take him out and place him near the basking spot and he just watches me but the second i walk away he goes back into his cave.

can someone please help and shed some light on this sort of behaviour

Posted by: filthyswine
Replies: 6

Sleeping habits of rankins?

Hi,
New (and very delighted) owner of a 3 month old rankins for about 3 weeks now and everything is going great -- eating habits are fine, no signs of stress/illness and she loves to be handled. Her name is Ursula and she lives in a vivexotic 3x2x2 viv with white paper towel as the substrate for the time being. she's got some logs and grape vines to climb and hide under as she pleases.

I just have a question about her sleeping habits, which I think may seem a bit odd -- she sleeps pretty much as soon as the uv light goes off, but i notice that she always, and i mean every night, sleeps in the hot end of the vivarium. during the day i turn the temp up to 34 degrees celcius and at night i drop it to about 32 degrees. i would assume that they like to burrow or hide in the cooler end of the tank, but not Ursula. Just wondering if this is out of the ordinary and if I have to do something about it? Thanks, and I look forward to hearing from you.

Or what would be the ideal age to take one on as a novice ?

Scratchy is a male 5 month old Rankins that we have had for two months. We feed him hoppers with the odd bit of cress. He gets handled a bit every day.

Scratchy has stopped eating and spends most days buried and sleeping. I rouse him if he hasn't got up by himself. It has now been 12 days where the most he has eaten has been a couple of hoppers after being presented them.

He didn't eat for two days the day after he came home but this could have been the stress of moving and a prolonged period out of his vivarium when I had to move the heater.

The vivarium is 4X2X2 ft and we use wood chip rather than bark as flooring because the original bag of bark was riddled with mites. He has eaten the odd bit of wood chip (while catching a hopper) with no obvious side effects previously but this could of course be a factor now.

The temperature in the hot end is about 95F (deduced from a cheap thermometer in the cool end that measures about 85F).

Any advice gratefully received.

Posted by: mart@egbert.co.uk
Replies: 10

Suitable Vivarium size? Prospective owner..

Hello all!

I am looking into owning a Rankin's Dragon, and have discovered much information through this website (for which I am very thankful!)

I am the kind of person however, who is never sure if they're doing the right thing! I've been browsing through my different options in terms of vivarium size, and have discovered that anything larger than this [url=http://www.amazon.co.uk/Vivexotic-LX36-Walnut-Reptile-Vivarium/dp/B0035V1596/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1325874774&sr=8-7:1ca41je0]Vivexotic LX36[/url:1ca41je0] Vivarium would be unsuitable with my available space. Would this be acceptable? The Vivarium measures L 92x W38x H41 cm, or L36"xW15"xH16". I think it's long enough, from my reading, but would it be wide and tall enough? I've read that Rankin's Dragon's tend to enjoy climbing a fair amount.

I will probably have many more questions if this is a suitable size....and if it isn't, then I shall wait until I do have the space - I don't want to be a cruel owner, and not provide enough space!

Many thanks in advance ladies 'n' gents!

P.s. this is an idea in the pipeline...and I have a lot more research to do first - does anyone have any links to a good place for information (Other than this website) so I can do some further reading? Cheers.

Posted by: asandhu
Replies: 1
