Pet Dragon Info:
7month old Rankins Dragon... Possibly male!
Hi all,

I think Ray my Rankins is sick. He hasn't been eating for two days and hasn't poo'd in this time either (he normally poos once a day at least). He also hasn't come out of his hide. I started to get worried so took a closer look at him - his eyes are really sunken and have gone really red - when he blinks he has like a membrane going across his eye.

Hot end temps are 30C (although this was slightly higher this week), cool end 26C. He is in a 36x15x15 viv and is fed on locusts and mealworm mainly. He has fresh veg (baby spinach at the moment) and water daily.

I will be taking him to the vets first thing in the morning but is there anything we can do tonight or has anybody seen this before? I called the out of hours vet and she said she isnt an exotic pet specialist so wasn't much help!

Thanks all. :( :(

After a trip to the vets Ray is much healthier. We've been given some reptoboost and gave him a bath, he is instantly more active and alert.

*HORROR* After the bath he was so active and slippery that I dropped him! Luckily he fell onto a bean bag. I was so worried and felt really guilty but he is absolutely fine.

He's now nice and active, his eye is fine, he looks plumper after his bath, and he has eaten a few locust (two of which I hand-fed for the first time ever!).

Pet Dragon Info:
I male Rankin called Button. 16 months old, Sadly passed away.
1 Blood red rainbow 1/2 cross Bearded Dragon called Solar 2 years old.(Male)Sadly passed away.
1 Bearded Dragon called Lunar 3 years old. Male!
I bearded dragon called Nando 2 year old Female
1 old Ginger Tom cat called Cookie.16 years.
Hi.
It sounds like he was dehydrated. Does he drink or sit in his water bowl?
They do get some water from their food but not enough.
I bath my beardies every 2-3 days because they never drink the water in their bowls, just walk through it filling it with sand.
They always have a good drink in their bath ( a cheap washing up bowl kept just for them).
I also drip water on their noses from a syringe on the evenings when they don't have a bath.

Sounds like he enjoyed his bath. Falling onto a bean bag shouldn't harm him as they can jump quite a distance and land without hurting themselves. Solar, my male beardie regularly jumps from one chair to the other ( at least 3 foot) and has often mis-timed his jump and landed on the floor.

I would be cautious about giving spinach leaves as it can bind with calcium causing calcium deficiency. They are ok occasionally but I wouldn't give them as a regular food.
Most other greens such as spring greens shredded, watercress (good source of calcium) rocket leaves etc are better nutritionally.

Hi Terri,

Thanks for the reply. He was dehydrated and perked up after a reptiboost bath. The vet made the same recommendation as you, bath twice a week :)

He also had a faecal test and has coccidia and pinworm, so he's on meds twice a day and also being bathed for twice a day.

Thanks for the veg tip, I will go and grab some rocket and watercress today.

Much appreciated!

Hi.
I'm so glad he's looking better. It can be a worry if you know there's something wrong but not sure what it is.
I had a similar problem with my female beardie, Lunar a few months ago. Hers was a bowel infection and She's fine now. :D
Back to running round her tank like a maniac.

It's great that he will take food from you, both my beardies will take food from my fingers. Solar my male goes mad for red and green peppers and Lunar likes thin slices of apple as a treat.
