Hi,

I think you should get him to a vet as soon as you can.

From your description it sounds like a respiratory infection. These can be serious if not treated. A blood test or mouth smear can usually confirm this quickly but he may need antibiotics for a week or two.

Increase his cage temps so that the basking zone is at around 102 degrees. Try to remove anything that may be adding humidity to his environment. and do a thorough cage cleaning. Use a very mild bleach/water solution to clean any cage furniture and make sure to rinse it thoroughly to remove any traces of bleach.

Hope this helps.

Best regards,
Mark

Hi,

It sounds as though the infection is not responding to the antibiotic.

Have your vet do what is called a "culture and sensitivity test". They can take blood or swab his mouth. The idea is to culture (grow) the infection and then see which antibiotic it reacts to (sensitivity). Injectable antibiotics are much more effective than oral meds. I have found the drug claforan works well to fight infection in lizards. It's a small dose injection given daily for about 2 weeks.

When giving injections to a lizard they should always be administered in the top 1/3 of the body (as far away from the kidneys as possible). I inject on their backs, right by their front legs.

The eye should be flushed twice daily with a saline solution to prevent it from gumming up. An antibiotic eye drop should also be used. All of this can be obtained from your vet.

Keep his cage as clean as possible and try upping the temperature by a degree of two. Syringe feed him small amounts of water to keep him hydrated and make sure that the syringe is always on top of his tongue before squirting anything in their. Lizards have a small hole (called the gullar) under their tongues which leads straight to their lungs. You don't want to risk getting fluid in his lungs.

I think he should start to improve once you get him on a medication that can fight the infection.

Hope this helps,
Mark

I'm so very, very sorry to hear that :( :( :( It must have been very upsetting for you.

It sounds as though it was a very serious infection and although this may come as little consolation I honestly don't think you could have done more than you did.

R.I.P. little one

Hi.

So sorry to hear you lost Ozzy.
I know how you feel when you know nothing more can be done.
I lost my beautiful Solar 6 weeks ago and it broke my heart but it was the kindest thing I could have done for him he was just too sick.

Rest in peace little Ozzy x x x
