Ok to get just one alone?

Tue Jul 10, 2012 3:31 am

So many people get more than one. And I have heard that they often times don't do well on their own. Is this common? And would it be less likely to happen if you got one that is still very young? I don't have a lot of time during the day to spend with one :( Would mostly be briefly in the morning, late afternoon/night, and weekends. I'm not going to get one if it runs the risk of being neglected of attention. Just having a hard time determining whether or not that would be the case :?:

yes it is, rankins dragons as with some lizards don't need the same social contact as some mamals do etc. guinea pigs. If you get two together you need to be sure on the gender of the lizard, two males could fight to the death, females are fine together. I have two girls they get along just well, you also have to watch feeding habits one lizard may eat and the other one doesn't it depends on dominance. Also if you get siblings, theres a risk of inbreeding. If you do get two I would recomend that you have a viv to spare if any issues appear. Getting only one might be an easier option for you, they do just fine alone.

hope this helps,
Buddy

I appreciate the info, Buddy :)
I knew beardies were definitely better alone, but was getting some conflicting info when it comes to rankins.

Hi,

In general lizards are solitary creatures, coming together briefly to mate then going their separate ways.

Rankins are touted as being more 'social' and I've certainly seen them kept together in groups without problems, however, the majority of the posts I've seen on this Board regarding colonies, or pairings, have not always ended well. There are invariably dominance problems that lead to them having to be separated.

I have all of mine housed separately and they do just fine that way :)

Hope this helps.

Best regards,
Mark
